THE ALL
AMERICAN 400 - OCT 6TH |
|
4th at Nashville |
|
Johnny came from the back of the field to a 4th
place finish in the Nashville All American shortened
by rain to 220 laps. After the original car, #61,
suffered engine problems, the team worked late
Friday night to prep the black #54 for the last
chance race on Saturday at 1:00.
With good
speed and fast pit stops, the #54 came to the front
from 35th on the starting grid, taking the lead and
battling with eventual winner Ross Kenseth #25 and
Kyle Bush #51 - top photo.
When showers came
and several yellows and restarts scrambled the
field, Johnny came right up to the front and had the
handling and fuel to fight for the win. But rain
returned and the race was flrst red flagged and then
called at lap 220. |

8th at the 300
.
With a new tire design
for the SLMs, finding the right setup would be
the key to the 300. Quick runs in the conci (a win)
and Sunday practice looked promising for the race,
but the #54 never had the expected handling. An
early stop for the right front fender repair put
Johnny at the back of the field. But the #54 was not
caught up in the ten car back-straght wreck on lap
162.
A late race stop for fresh tires did
not pan out since the new design is fast only for 5
to 10 laps. Johnny battled up to 8th at the
finish but was not running well enough to challenge
the front pack. |

16th
at Stafford after a Crash
With the black #54
running very well, Johnny was coming to the front to
battle for the lead with Teddy Christopher in the
Mulkern #18. Johnny held the lead at the start
finish on a couple of laps. DJ Shaw in the #60 came
up and made it a lead trio. On lap 90, DJ took it a
little too hard into turn one, slid up, and nailed
Johnn just behind the front wheel, sending the #54
into the fence and out of the race with severely
damaged front suspension. At the mid break for tires
changes, abnormal wear was noted and the race was
shortened to 110 laps, down for the original 125. |

A last
place finish in the heat again led to many changes
before the feature and a last row starting position.
Johnny worked his way up to 6th in the feature
before rain stopped the race at lap 123. |

Big
changes after the heat and a couple of pit visits in
the race made the #54 better at the end. Steady
progress resulted in a solid points night with a

THURS., JULY 12th
.
613th at Oxford
.
The #54 had been OK in
practice and the heat but the grip went away in the
race. Two stops in the pits for a range of
changes did little to improve the handling of
the #54 on the 250 weekend. Johnny worked his way
through the field but could only make it to 13th at
the checkers. |

THURS., JULY 12th
.
67th at Thompson
.
The win in heat two
looked good for the feature. But problems with the
left front suspension popped up in the 75 lap race
and produced a very worn tire. The #54 dropped
into a conservative run for a 7th place finish. |

|
SAT., JULY 7th
.
66th at Beech Ridge
.
On a day when almost all
the teams were searching for some grip, Johnny
finished 7th in his heat and had to transfer to the
feature with a win in the last chance. Starting
22nd, the #54 needed several stops in the pits for
handling adjustments to get a bit better and make
some progress. Up to 6th, Johnny slowed for a
spin and got run over and spun out in turn one.
Fighting back in the last 11 laps, he made it back
to 6th. With others having poor finishes, Johnny
pulled to within 4 of the points lead, but now only
2 points ahead of the #77 of Cassius Clark in
third. |

SAT., JUNE 30th
9th at Canaan
With the #54 just not
handling as well as it should have, Johnny was
slowly making his way up from 14th and challenging
for 6th spot. A tangle on the main straight saw the
#54 hit the nose of the #14 and flatten the right
front. Back with a fresh tire and luckily no other
suspension damage, Johnny ran through the field from
17th to 9th in the final 20 laps. |

fifth place. |

Johnny takes the first
segment and the overall win |
Johnny , who won the first
59-lap race, outpointed second-race victor Frank
Moulton of Burnham for the overall victory.
Liberty’s Josh St. Clair was third overall, with the
top five filled out by Palmyra’s Ajay Picard and
Dylan Turner of Freedom.
“This victory means
a lot, both to me and my father,” the winner said in
victory lane, after performing the familiar Big John
Phippen victory lap, running laps around the winning
car, owned by Dean Fuller of Albion, while waving
the checkered flag. “He won a race here in 1981 and
in tech they thought there’s no way he could beat
John Phippen without cheating.
“When I won my
first Pro Stock race at Wiscasset it was John
Phippen who finished second.” That race was a
150-lap special event, when Clark was just
17-years-old.
“This is my third win on
Father’s Day at Unity, but my first as a father,”
Clark said. “I wanted to win this race real bad for
my father. I’ll tell you, these Late Models are a
lot harder to drive than the Pro Stocks I’ve won
with here before.”
