A draw of the pole for heat one, an easy heat win, and pulling away at the drop of the green in the 250 all indicated that the #54 was the class of the field. After leading 128 laps (and collecting $ 12,800 in lap money), Johnny T-boned a spinning backmarker in a huge cloud of smoke exiting turn four. The crew got the car back on the track quickly (losing only 18 laps), but the hope of the win was over.
