PASS Race #13 - Lee USA Speedway - 9/5

Great competition, the third 3rd in a row, a heart stopping moment, and a couple more points added to the championship points lead made for a great event at Lee USA Speedway on Sunday, September 5th.

Ben Rowe topped a field of thirty-four PASS racers in Sunoco Race Fuel time trials with a lap of 15.168 seconds, just edging Johnny at 15.204 for the honors. Johnny drew ninth place for the Dash and raced up to seventh. Travis Khiel and Wayne Helliwell held on to their draw spots and formed the front row for the AutoDealerMagazine.com 150.

The sun broke through the clouds for the start and the PASS cars looked awesome snaking through Lee's turn 3. Wayne Helliwell took the lead and started to build on it. Tracy Gordon and Johnny began moving up, running the bottom grove. Grip in 3 and 4 had been tough to find all day long, especially on the outside. Sammy Sessions running high and trying to hang on got sideways and came back to the bottom just behind Johnny but in front of a bunch of other cars.

Richie Dearborn had the hooked-up car of the day and was on his way to his first PASS win. As Richie moved to second and then with an outside pass into first, Johnny took fourth.

A called-back restart about the 110 lap mark was the heart stopping moment of the day. A lazy green was shown at start finish since the front row was out of shape, and a PASS official in turn two waved the cars to slow down. Unfortunately not everyone understood what was happening and some cars slowed while others did not and plowed into the sides and backs of some of the leading cars. Johnny emerged looking real bad but apparently with nothing that would slow him down. (Four shot sequence on the photo page.) As the race wound down, Johnny ran down Helliwell and passed for another solid third.

Ben never had the #00 working well and, even after adjustments in the pits, could only work his way up to 8th. The five place difference adds 10 more points to Johnny's lead.
